Bill
Treacy, a long-time supporter of Irish freedom as a labor leader in the
tradition of James Connolly, retired this week. |
5 Oct 1985 Irish People (USA) Bill Treacy Retires William F. Treacy, the third of Thomas and Mary
Agnes Treacys 12 children, was born in Killea, Templemore, Co. Tipperary. He
has four sisters and one brother still living in Ireland, while two brothers
and four more sisters live in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area Bill
is married to the former Leah Ryan, and is the father of two sons and a
daughter. Before immigrating to the United States in 1947,
Bill Treacy served in the First Field Engineers of the Irish Army for a
period of three years Prior to leaving Ireland, he was employed by the Irish
Postal Department. A lifetime lover of sports, Bill Teacy played football and
hurling in Killea, and ran with the All Army Eastern Command and the First
Field Engineers in Ireland. In the late 1940's and 1950's he played on the
County Tipperary Hurling Club in New York City. Joining Local 30 of the Operating Engineers in 1960,
Bill obtained his stationary engineer's license and his heating,
refrigeration and air-conditioning license Continuing his engineering studies
at Delehanty Institute and New York University, Bill also studied labor
management and labor law at Cornell University. Elected business agent for Local 30 in 1960, Bill
went on to be elected business manager in 1971, and still serves in that
capacity. Bill serves on the executive board of the New York State Conference
of Operating Engineers, and is a member of the New York City Central Labor
Council. The inspiration of the ten young men who gave their
lives for Ireland during the 1981Hunger Strike touched Bill Treacys heart and
reinforced his motivation to press the AFL-CIO into the forefront of the
drive for human and civil rights It was his strenuous effort which moved the
AFL-CIO from a passive role to one of intense participation. Today, the
American Labor unions are committing themselves to the adoption of the
MacBride Principles and other non-discriminatory practices within American
companies doing business in the occupied six counties. Bill Treacy is an initiating sponsor and president
of the Irish American Labor Coalition and cofounder of the Irish American
Unity Conference. Bill has played a leading role in planning and
developing events which mark the annual Irish Solidarity Day demonstrations
held in Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in New York City each September since 1982.
This annual event now serves as a model for demonstrations in a growing
number of American cities where the Irish-American community has elected to
show their support for and dedication to the struggle for a free ad reunited
Ireland. Bill Treacys leadership has set a standard which many are now
following. Working together, Irish-Americans can indeed reclaim the land of
their heritage. |

Captain
Lloyd. The family story that has been handed down by the Treacy's involves a
British officer named Lloyd. The family apparently lived on land that was part
of this officer's estate (Lloydsborough). They were evicted and they moved to
Kilea, Co Tipperary to a cottage that was built by the Land League. Pop
(Michael Joseph) Treacy told the story with great heat, as if it had happened
just the other day rather than before his birth in 1888. To the day he died Pop
blamed this man for the loss of the family's land. L.Nestor
